Amman’s Skyline Set to Change: Jordan Launches Citadel Cable Car Project

Construction is expected to progress swiftly, with operations scheduled to begin within 15 months of the project’s start.

Jordan’s capital, Amman, is preparing to unveil a spectacular new way to experience its rich history and scenic hillsides. The government has officially launched the “Citadel Cable Car” project, a landmark tourism initiative that promises to reshape how visitors explore one of the Middle East’s most captivating cities.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, who described the project as a transformative step toward revitalizing Amman’s central and eastern districts. During a recent cabinet session, officials shared visuals of the upcoming attraction — a modern cable car system that will link key historical and cultural sites, offering breathtaking views over the city’s terraced neighborhoods.

A New Era for Tourism in Amman

Prime Minister Hassan emphasized that the project is a high priority for the government, calling it “a vital tourism, investment, and economic driver.” Beyond enhancing Amman’s tourism appeal, the cable car is expected to create new jobs and stimulate local businesses, helping to breathe new life into older areas of the city.

The initiative aligns with national efforts to preserve Amman’s heritage while presenting it to the world as a vibrant, accessible destination that harmonizes tradition with progress.

Project Highlights and Routes

The project will be carried out by Ru’ya Amman, the investment arm of the Greater Amman Municipality, with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

According to the preliminary plan, the Citadel Cable Car will feature two main routes:

  • Route 1: Connecting the Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal’a) with the Al-Lweibdeh area — a hub for art galleries, boutique cafés, and creative spaces.

  • Route 2: Linking the Citadel directly with the Roman Theater in downtown Amman, one of the city’s most visited archaeological sites.

Construction is expected to progress swiftly, with operations scheduled to begin within 15 months of the project’s start. Once completed, the Citadel Cable Car will give tourists a new way to experience Amman’s iconic skyline — gliding above ancient ruins, bustling streets, and hillside homes.
